Currently the taxation of cannabis is complex. Between differentiating between medical and adult-use and city, county and state regulations, there is a lot to understand. While government officials see cannabis taxation as a lucrative revenue source, the extremely high tax rates are already hobbling the cannabis industry in its infancy. In Part I of the Cannabis Business Times series, "Growing Pains", will explore the present-day convoluted landscape of U.S. state and local taxation extremes and inconsistencies while searching for taxation systems that may prove germane to future policy decisions.
