We're Watching These New Cannabis Laws

With the passage of the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act in 2022, there is more federal and state reform to come. Here are just a few new laws we're keeping our eye on:

Increased Access to Banking Services for Cannabis Businesses—Cannabis businesses have been largely unable to use traditional banking services due to federal laws that classify cannabis as a Schedule I drug. However, in 2023, more banking services could be available to cannabis businesses with the The Safe and Fair Enforcement (SAFE) Banking Act.

Expanded Access to Medical Marijuana—Along with more states legalizing recreational cannabis, recent federal legislation now supports the medical use of cannabis with more research. The Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol Research Expansion Act would facilitate cannabis research by asking the DEA to move more quickly on applications for the manufacture of research products—as well as the research itself.

Legalization of Cannabis in More States—As the cannabis industry continues to grow, more states are expected to legalize cannabis in some form in 2023. Maryland, North Carolina and Pennsylvania are currently in the midst of legislation legalizing a range of usage from medical to adult depending on the state.
